The Vintage Colette Woman Series: Eno Okafor

Eno Okafor is the founder and Creative Director of the fashion brand Diana A La Vid, also known as DLV. She studied Mathematics and Computer science at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. After graduation, she decided to follow her passion for entrepreneurship and fashion.

My Mom Taught Me How To Sew
 
At DLV, we dress women elegantly for everyday living. Our clothes are simple classic pieces with a touch of graphic detailing, helping women look dressed up without trying too hard. As such, we have two main brands tailored for that purpose. We have our maxi dresses, which also are our best sellers. And we also have DLV Chic, for the young and contemporary who like to wear a bit more daring outfits. 

I picked up sewing from my mother after secondary school, during the ASUU strike, while i was waiting for admission into the Federal University of Technology, Minna. During that period I gave my mum attention and watched as she taught me the basics I needed to know about sewing. During that process, I thought to myself that I might as well sketch what I want to make and that's literally how I got into fashion design. While in university, I continued to design and began my foray into pattern making.


We Want To Create a Lifestyle Shopping Experience

Diana a La Vid started in 2012 and I am really glad I am doing my own thing. At DLV we source all our fabrics locally, every two weeks to be precise. We cater for women of sizes 6-18 range but if we use a certain fabric for a specific style, we only make one of that style in each size. So if you see something in our store and you don’t get it, and it goes, you wouldn’t get another one of that same style and same fabric. Sorry *Laughs*

In the next five years, we would love to own our own DLV building in a centralized location in town. This business was actually a beneficiary of the previous administration’s YOUWin Grant. It enabled us to get as far as we have been able to get. But in a few years, we would love to own our very own space and be the leading retailer of high street fashion. We want to create a lifestyle shopping experience for consumers, both female and male alike.

Business Owners Struggle to Pay for Things like Their Own Electricity 

The electricity situation is something that I would ask the Nigerian government to address if I could speak with them. I would also ask that they give us more tax incentives and reduce simple things like VAT. As business owners we are already struggling to pay for our own electricity, which is extremely expensive. If the VAT or other tax bills were at least reduced, this is money that we could be reinvesting back into our businesses. We could pay higher salaries and do more in the country.

The Vintage Colette Brand Is Very Creative

As a designer, I can tell you that I think the Vintage Colette brand is very creative. The texture of the fabrics are very appealing and the brand just has a range of concepts that work for different people and different lifestyles.

The Vintage Colette photo shoot was inspired as a form of tribute to celebrate female entrepreneurs as every day women. We wanted to bridge the gap and allow our customers to relate well with our brand. We decided to start with entrepreneurial women from a vast range of businesses who understood what it meant to run a business within Nigeria. It took four months to prepare for this photo shoot from day one to the day of the photo shoot. Even though I had initially been advised against the idea as this was contrary to what any Nigerian designer had ventured into, I chose to go ahead because I was a woman, a designer and an entrepreneur. I knew that I could be as contrary as I wanted to be because otherwise, I would be in a constant state of collapse whenever I innovated anything.

I wanted to celebrate these women who are realistic, strong, focused and determined to excel. They motivate me and consistently keep myself and other women true to their core. Each fabric, style and color was designed for the persona and style of the female entrepreneur wearing Vintage Colette. The looks are different, but the souls are the same, as are the things and people that constantly inspire me in life. That is the true persona of the Vintage Colette woman. 

This photo shoot is a celebration of personal style that ignores the demand from the outside, a carefully followed and well researched journey, one that I hope would serve me for many more years ahead.

Binta Shuaibu is a fashion designer and entrepreneur. She is the founder and head designer of Vintage Colette, a fashion manufacturing brand that focuses on innovative and revolutionized Afrocentric fashion trends for the everyday woman. With her leadership and managerial skills she has moved her company forward and exhibited at the London Fashion Week, won the maiden edition of MTN/LFDW/British Council designer award of the year 2011, Best Designer of the year for ‘I am Priceless’ campaign for the Blue Heart Foundation UNODC 2012, a recipient of the Vlisco Fashion Dream Fund Award and also a Vital Voices Fellow.



Why I Used Female Entrepreneurs for this Particular Vintage Colette Photoshoot

I was motivated to use female entrepreneurs for the photo shoot because the Vintage Colette brand is all about the everyday woman, and female entrepreneurs represent everyday women. I wanted my customers to relate well with my products and know that they too can wear them and look fabulous. The female entrepreneur all over the world hardly gets or finds the time to shop and enjoy their timeless effort towards growing their companies and brands even those in the fashion industry. This was the opportunity I saw to uplift and boost their self-esteem and confidence which is my brand’s driving force.

We Aim to Create Apparel for the Retro, Fashion Focused Woman

The driving force of the Vintage Colette brand is to boost the self-esteem and confidence of a woman so that she feels like she’s wearing an international brand. We aim to create apparel for the retro fashion focused woman that are fresh, exciting, functional and fashionable. Once that is achieved by what we do, we can assure you that we have transformed your wardrobe from drag to fab with essential pieces that are absolutely worth the investment. We want to teach women how to build a wardrobe since they don’t usually go out with a motive or reason to shop…shopping is the trending ‘Sport’ for women of this generation.

Being a Designer is Different From Being a Designer Business Woman
I see myself establishing a successful Nigerian brand and as well as within the East African market. Over the course of the next one year- we will come up with a very good strategic plan to make all this feasible- being a fashion designer is completely different from being a fashion entrepreneur since the latter transforms the art of fashion into a successful money making venture.

We are trying to create a lot of business awareness and we are really doing a lot to make the customers feel like they are buying an international brand- we try our best to give our customers a value for their money. We have set up the right team and they are interested in the growth of the company. Working with our brand is not any old regular job to my team and I am proud that they are passionate about what they do and can push through, even in hard times.

Nigeria Needs a Female Economy

I want the Nigerian woman to know that it is their job to provide the society in which they operate with results from their businesses. Let your performance speak without you uttering a word in any crowd you may ever find yourself. Take different routes towards the direction of your original path or goal for life and business can be unpredictable, but they should never deter away from the end goal you want to achieve.

The Nigerian government should create policies that would create a female economy since women always invest back into their homes and try to empower generations ahead through their children. They should also create a lot of incentives in tax and grants for women owned 
businesses.

Everything I Produce is Made in Nigeria
I have been an interior furniture designer for over 10 years. I started making furniture in Nigeria and everything I produce is Made in Nigeria. I actually studied English in school, but I chose interior design because that was what I was attracted to. Like others, I have also tried other businesses including selling clothes, owning a salon, etc., but interior design was my passion. And because I wanted to really do well in interior design, I took some design courses in Dubai and I am currently working on my Masters in Design. I want to be a professional designer who brings projects to life.

It’s Difficult for Women in Nigeria to do business

It’s difficult for women in Nigeria to do business. Women are very vulnerable because we are more exposed to those who want us to exchange our bodies for business opportunities. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “….meet me at this hotel if you want to get that contract.” It’s really disheartening sometimes, but women should know that seriousness pays off. Women should never give up. We are stronger than what we think we are and stronger than what a lot of people think we are.

If We Had Light, Products Would be Cheaper

At L and N Interiors, we face electricity challenges 24/7 when trying to produce our furniture. If I could talk to the Nigerian government, I would tell them to give us light *laughs.* If we had light, products would be cheaper and costs would go down. Also, we often have to import certain wood items and upholstery that aren’t available in Nigeria, and that can be extremely costly.

This photo shoot was very exciting for me to be a part of. I liked the fact that it was about empowering women and motivating others. We need that sometimes as women. I have to be honest and say that I didn’t know how nice Vintage Colette clothing was until recently. I love the clothes! They are extremely comfortable, decent for me and stylish for everyone.

We Work Predominantly With Female Suppliers

Santifood Co is a two year old food/beverage processing company. We recently opened our first food outlet in Wuse 2. It houses yogurts, healthy drinks and other convenient packed food. What’s great about Santifood Co is that we take what we have locally here in Nigeria and package it to fit international standards. We get a significant amount of our of our ingredients and materials from local businesses and work with all female suppliers, unless they don’t have what we need.

I also have a Garment manufacturing business. We produce high quality made on Nigeria clothing for local brands. We also have an in-house brand called NOWRIE. The idea is to provide fashion entrepreneurs the option of having production outsourced and not having to set up a unit of their own. This gives them the opportunity to have their brands without investing in equipment and staff.

If We Had Power, that would mean about 20% more money in the hands of businesses
Nigerian business spend a considerable amount of time and energy dealing with the lack of basic infrastructure. For example if we didn't have to worry about buying generators, exorbitant interest rates and multiple taxation, that would mean that much more to use for expansion, marketing or even to hire more qualified personnel for their businesses.If we had power, that would mean about 20% more money in the hands of businesses. That’s a lot! Can you imagine the entrepreneur landscape without all these issues?

Before government formulates policies, they should find out the real issues on ground. I also believe they should get the input of entrepreneurs before they pass certain legislation. Entrepreneurs understand the issues in their respective industries and can give better insight into providing solutions. The Nigerian government should give us basic infrastructure like power.

Whatever You Want to do in Life or Business, Just Start
To any woman trying to go into business, do your research. It is extremely important that you get your facts right; get training if you need to, and then, just do it. As cliché as it may sound, just do it. Whatever you want to do in life or business, the most important step is to start. But just remember that it has to be something you can commit long term to, because it won’t be easy and without perseverance, all business die early deaths.

I decided to do this photo shoot because I loved what Binta was trying to achieve for all female entrepreneurs. Women don’t get enough opportunities to showcase their businesses, most especially women-based businesses in the north. So this was a great opportunity for me. I love the Vintage Colette collection because they are easy to wear, light, and great for this weather –very considerate of this weather *laughs*

Northern Nigeria is a Great Place to Raise a Family
I started baking about six years ago as a hobby, but today, I currently bake for business- wedding cakes, birthday cakes etc. I had a small shop I ran for a bit before I closed it down. I love to read, so it was only right that the shop I ran reflected that. I also write and have published two books so far in the last few years. I like Jos: the weather, the ambiance and overall stillness. Despite recent turmoil in the North, I still believe that Northern Nigeria is a great place to raise a family.

Recent Price Hikes Hit Me Really Hard

My expenses sky rocketed immediately after I opened my shop in Jos and I’m also dealing with the current price hikes. The recent price hikes hit me really hard because I had to make several adjustments to the way I ran my business. Jos is not the best place to do leisure business because if you offer a non-priority product, your business will suffer. Many of us had have to restructure the way our businesses are set up because of what it currently going on in the country. I am currently at a restructuring phase myself, and as a business owner, you have to mentally prepare yourself for adjustments.

Before You Start a Business, Plan Well
I believe I could have done better planning before I started my business. I should have definitely planned my accounts and finances better and believe that if I had, I would not have had as many vulnerable points during my last couple of years in business. If I were to give advice to women who wanted to go into business, or even anyone, I would say plan better. It is always a good idea to hire a financial analyst to check and run your numbers before you start your business. You would do much better because of it.

I believe the Nigerian government could do a better job of providing relief to small business. They should go easy on businesses with the taxes. There should also be tax breaks for small and new business owners for at least the first two to five years and they should not duplicate taxes in each state.

This photo shoot was an opportunity for me to glam up and I loved the idea of a dress made to fit me perfectly. My body is not what it used to be after two kids. I have a much thicker waist, thicker arms, thicker everything! *laughs* I love the fact that with Vintage Colette you can still wear a beautiful dress that flatters you as you are. These clothes were made for the everyday woman.

I Just Wanted to do Something Different

In 2010, I started a catering company called Good Eats. We specialize in gourmet hors d'oeuvres, finger foods and canapés. I’ve always had a passion for cooking and I’ve always wanted to do something in the food industry, but I didn’t exactly know what that was many years ago. I saw that everyone was into catering things like rice, fufu and other things, but I just wanted to do something different. I wanted a challenge. I started doing finger foods as a hobby and the response I got was quite good and because we were in Nigeria, people loved the idea of having unique and different types of finger foods than the usual buns etc. But again, because we are in Nigeria my best-selling product was still the “puff-puff” of course *laughs.* Right now, we also have this branded chilli that has been doing very well..

I Found Time to Develop My Craft
After graduation, I decided to try entrepreneurship. I sold clothes amongst other legit items but nothing worked. My mother had always been my pillar of support considering that parents of that generation always wanted their kids to study professional courses. For that I would always be grateful to her. I remember when I started my business; on my 1st job I had to borrow a camping gas to cook. I also borrowed table cloth from my aunt *laughs* and that only made me more determined.

Good eats is not your average food service provider. What sets us apart is our unique plating, presentation and display. I started the company by turning my hobby into a profit making venture. I found the path I wanted to follow and found time to develop my craft, train a few others and took things one step at a time. The company has grown from catering for 50 guests to catering for 500-1000 guests at multiple events every weekend. I'm looking forward to making the company recognized nationwide and globally. In the nearest future, I also want to start an agency where people can hire cooks and chefs that have been trained by us.

If the Cost of Living was Cheaper, Nigerian Businesses Would Do BetterElectricity is a big challenge for most businesses here in Nigeria and I’m not excluded from this challenge. The electricity here makes it difficult to run my business. I could be making spring rolls for a large order-and as you may know, they need to thaw a little and freeze. But the spring rolls could be in the freezer overnight and we lose electricity. It's definitely frustrating because we have to throw food away at times. The Nigerian government should address the electricity issues, along with the cost of living. The cost of living in Nigeria should be way cheaper than it currently is. If the cost of living was cheaper, Nigerian businesses would do better because in addition to the high costs of rent and land, you have infrastructural costs, diesel costs and so on.

This photo shoot was a privilege and I am glad that I was a part of it as it was something completely different for me. It was a lifestyle shoot, and the cooking life is anything but glamorous *laughs.* The Vintage Colette brand is a very relatable brand. The clothes are really different. They are conservative, but relatable and very ready for wearing. I’ll be wearing Vintage Colette for many years to come.

Dr Hilda Titiloye is a licensed medical practitioner with a Masters Degree in Aesthetic Medicine from the University of Cordoba, Spain and a post-graduate diploma in Clinical dermatology from Queen Mary University of London. She is a member of the Nigerian Medical association, an associate member of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists and a member of the International association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine. She is married with two boys. 

I Was Drawn to the Challenge and Uncharted Territory

My background is in medicine. As a secondary school student, I was good in the sciences. As an natural path back in the day, that meant you went to med school, so I did. I had always been attracted to beauty and perfection from a young age and after Med school wanted to specialize in plastic/cosmetic surgery, but following a reality check, I accepted I simply didn't have the stamina to withstand the rigors of a surgical residency training program while being a mother and a wife. After my youth service, while working as a general practitioner, we encountered quite a number of outpatient dermatology cases that were not only puzzling and challenging to me, but to my non-dermatology trained superiors as well. This sparked my interest in dermatology, then cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic medicine. I was tremendously fortunate(I consider this providence) to meet and work with a cosmetic dermatologist, one of the best in West Africa, who saw where my interests and passion were, and he encouraged me to go for the post graduate diploma in clinical dermatology in preparation for the Masters in Aesthetic medicine. Aesthetic medicine is a relatively new field of medicine that uses non- surgical treatments to enhance and improve physical appearance.

SKIN101 Clinics is a medical skincare, aesthetics, anti-aging and laser clinic which started in November, 2015. It is a culmination of more than 6 years of post-graduate training and experience. So ultimately I get to live my dream of using my medical skills to enhance beauty without the rigors of surgery.

I Have Made Mistakes as an Entrepreneur  

I will say I am a serial entrepreneur. I previously owned a bridal store and tried other business ventures where I made poor choices, several mistakes and learned many hard lessons HANDS ON. With SKIN101, I wanted to offer something truly different. Yes, we are offering a medical service, but I wanted the experience around that service to blow our customer's minds away. The customer service, the friendliness and ambiance of the facility, the genuine care and concern for the patient, the ease of doing business with us...I wanted the customer to come into the clinic and not want to leave. We wanted to have a standard comparable to similar clinics anywhere else in the world. Being an appointment only clinic, we have had challenges with getting patients to honor appointments and keep to time, but the feedback has been pretty good. We are however not resting on out oars, we are continuously striving to improve on what we have started building. We planned every detail at the clinic for more than a year, and with God's blessings our take-off has been smooth sailing.


Skin Bleaching is a Huge Problem in Nigeria

A large number of the patients we see either come in with the desire to lighten/bleach their skin (which we will not do) or they come with post-bleaching complications. Within the next 5 years, we hope to start a beauty therapy training school, a skincare line and a massive skin pride campaign. Our beauty therapy training institute will target non- medical skincare "specialists" from the spas and non-medical skincare centers. We want to bring in some structure and professionalism into this industry along with getting these cadre of skincare service providers on the bandwagon of our "beauty in all shades" campaign. We are currently working on getting VTCT training certification from the UK, so the certificates earned will have a wider reach and can be used in several countries. There are too many "skin specialists" mixing bleaching creams. And believe me they have no idea the degree of damage these creams do. Imagine a product changes your skin by several shades in a few weeks, what will it do in a few years? And we definitely cannot think that removing the protective melanin God gave us will have no repercussions...it will!

Our skin care line will be melanin-friendly, eco-friendly, weather friendly, pocket friendly and of course proudly made in Nigeria. Catering to the peculiar needs of our beautiful African skin. We see patients in their 20s, 30s, 40s with already damaged skin. We do try to salvage as much as possible but what we should do is stop people from starting the use of these bleaching products form the outset. The "beauty in all shades" campaign will target the younger generation. Beauty is not limited to light skin, all colors of skin are beautiful...if well looked after! And this is what we should teach our daughters and sons. That is the only way to curb this menace. Change the way they think from that young age.

Government Should Provide Financial Relief to New Businesses 
Running a business in Nigeria has it peculiar challenges of poor infrastructure, difficulty sourcing capable staff etc, but top of them all is financing. This will be over-flogging the issue and sounding like a broken record but the small businesses are the bedrock of every economy, they need a lot of governmental support. The ridiculously high interest rates and conditions from the banks to access funding are prohibitive and impossible for most small businesses. While the "idea" is most important for entrepreneurial prowess, the lack of funding will continue to stunt many dreams and ventures.

I have always been proud to be affiliated and associated with the Vintage Colette brand, there is no way I wouldn't have been attracted to this photo shoot. I have known Binta Shuaibu for more than 20 years and I have admired her doggedness and tenacity. She has been consistent with the vision she has for this brand from when she won the Lagos Fashion and Design week in 2012 till date. The Vintage Colette brand is easy to love for the creative, wearable, practical every day pieces and the great attention to detail and quality. I am proud that it is made in Nigeria and I am proud of Binta!








Once Upon a Photoshoot-Pre Photoshoot

At Vintage Colette, VC, we recently had our first photo shoot of the year. The first half of 2016 has been relatively quiet for most fashion designers in Nigeria. Perhaps this is due to the economy and a reduction in the amount of eager shoppers we usually encounter. I asked around and realized businesses were facing the same challenges. So for the first Vintage Colette photo shoot of 2016, I decided to change things up and do something that had never been done before. I was going to use REAL WOMEN to model the VC brand and remind everyone that these were real clothes for the EVERYDAY woman.

I needed my customers to relate well with the VC brand…to be able to say, ‘I know that woman. I can also wear what she is wearing.’ It was no longer about using perfect models for the shoot- not that I have anything against using models. I have used quite a lot in the past and they were wonderful. This time around was just about being an everyday woman.

The first selfish call I made was to my entrepreneur friends. I briefed them about my idea to use them in the VC photo shoot. To my delight, everyone I contacted was interested. They were women from different industries, chefs, writers, medical doctors, fashion designers, event managers and so on. Some ended up cancelling their photo shoot appointments due to last minute travel arrangements, but they made promises to indulge me in my next photo shoot. I contacted everyone from housewives to public servants for this shoot and my list was much longer than I expected, as they all said yes!

I then went on to contact Henry of BigH studios in Abuja, a highly creative photographer that I’ve always wanted to work with but never could because of timing. I discussed my idea with him for the VC editorial and VC high street brand and he came on board right away. We also discussed the number of participants, possible locations, permits required for the locations, a 2 day period for the different shoots and color themes. At the end of the meeting, we both agreed to meet at the VC office to see the finished products and finally conclude on the entire shoot.

After I had secured my ‘models’ and photographer, the next thing I had to do was contact my cinematographer of choice. I wanted to have GLAM SHOTS for this particular shoot….not the type you see on Instagram that came from and IPhone, but real GLAM SHOTS from a professional cinematographer. There was already someone that I knew named Luke, who was a highly skilled professional. I had prepared him for this idea about 8 months beforehand and when we sat down to discuss the technical aspects of the shoot, I briefed him about changes I wanted to make since we had initially discussed this project. We went through samples of his work and played around with my ideas and vision, how many team members he would be required to work with, props he needed from the brand, and so on. Then just as I had agreed with Henry, Luke and I also agreed to meet at the VC office when the final garments were ready and conclude on the entire shoot.

Next, I contacted all parties involved in the shoot and requested that they come over to the VC office to have their measurements taken and to discuss their individual personalities so that I could design what they would wear. I discussed each of their personalities with them, what they liked to wear, their style preferences, colours they hated, weather conditions, their availabilities for the shoots, preferred hairstyles and finally, what they would never be caught DEAD wearing….lol.
 
After meeting with all of our photo shoot participants, I developed the mood board and designed all the garments in a tiny part of my brain….no, actually a large portion…lol. Sounds crazy but I did that mentally because it was easier for me to alter anything at anytime without having to pick up a sketch pad and a pencil. We had a total of 20 garments to create after all- 14 high street and 6 couture/custom made ones. While sketching my last garment on CAD/CAM, I got a call informing me that my son needed emergency surgery. He was on holiday with my husband and was 500kms away from me. I was in a state of solitary conferment until the surgery was over and my husband, who is a physician, told me that my son was fine and there was nothing to worry about. By the next morning, quite a few greys had popped out of my scalp and I quickly picked up my hair dye and did you KNOW WHAT.

Over the weeks preceding the photo shoot, I went fabric shopping and began production while doing all my fittings concurrently as soon as any garment was ready. All the custom made garments took a minimum of 76 hours to make and then an additional 3 hours for alterations and a second fitting. The high street garments took less than 24 hours alter after every fitting. The best part of designing the garments were the women who would be wearing them. They all loved their individual garments. 

 Days prior to the photo shoots, I met with Henry and Luke once again and also introduced both of them to one another. It was during this meeting that we discovered that our earlier dates of May 20th and 21st for photo shoots had not been saved with Henry due to technical error and unfortunately he had already booked another client for the 21st. So we had to reschedule our photo shoot to the 19th and 20th of June 2016. I made a mental note to call all the participants to find out if their schedule was clear for the 19th and they were all available. We moved to talking about possible locations and decided on using BigH studios for the 19th and the Abuja World Trade Center (WTC) for the 20th. The WTC fitted the construction site setting we were looking for and I contacted my friend who worked at the WTC. The next day, we were able to schedule an appointment to see the marketing manger and also the location. The prospects were high even before we met because they sounded very excited about the idea of a photo shoot in their location. We had a warm welcome at WTC by the entire team and especially after we had briefed the marketing manager. We went and checked out all the possible locations onsite and finally decided on the 22nd floor which gave us the perfect view we had all hoped for. All we had to do was wait for the marketing manager to talk to the main manager and who would probably also be requesting a meeting.

A WTC staff member called me the following day to set up appointment to see the manager at 3pm that same day. I showed up on time and was unfortunately met by an arrogant personality of Indian descent who continuously waved his Nigerian passport around his face. I smiled as I began to answer all his questions and concerns about the publicity the shoot would generate for his project. He requested for the name of the photo studio and immediately checked them on Instagram. “They are below my standard,” he said…. Then he proceeded to say that if we were in real estate, he might have considered the option of letting us use the space for the shoot but that he wouldn’t agree at the end but asserted that his consideration was to be measured as a level of great evaluation coming from his image. He said fashion editorial was a NO NO and that besides myself, my brand and my entire team did not and would NEVER meet his customer profile or even know them, considering the fact that none of us could afford his NGN 500,000,000 3-bedroom apartment within the residential complex of WTC or a Rolex watch….lol…his words not mine.

What an arrogant short man, I thought, as I clearly got irritated by his words while still remaining calm. He then said that the best he could offer was to get back to me in 2 weeks with a likely YES or NO answer, which I could already see was a NO. I sternly told him that it was either a yes or a no now, this very moment. That the fact that we cant afford his property doesn’t mean we do not have the resources to market them to family and friends who could- that just because we didn’t wear a ROLEX to his meeting didn’t mean we couldn’t afford one…Michael Kors was good enough, I figured…lol…. he couldn’t partner with the WTC to build in India but decided to do so in NIGERIA where there was free unaccounted money and invest in real estate.

By the way that was 2 days to the shoot.

Back at the Vintage Colette office, the team arranged all the garments for the 19th by name and then styled them with jewelry from my private collection. On this particular day, 2 days to the photo shoot I received three calls from three of the participating women who were cancelling due to work and personal emergencies. I was sure my blood pressure went up that day but I still moved on to plan B and called upon an interior architect who was great at what she did. I explained the situation to her and politely asked if she would be willing to participate due to the short notice. She fell in love with the idea instantly and came in as soon as she could for her fitting, which was perfect. That was one person taken care of. I sourced for a model from an agency and they sent 5 models, who had all lied about their sizes as they didn’t fit into any of the garments. One of my interns volunteered to fill one of the two remaining slots and she was a perfect fit. It suddenly dawned on me that I had to mentally alter the sequence of all the garments as these cancellations were going on to other garments that were initially planned in the shoot. I then made contact with the caterer, 2 makeup artists, and VC staff team members who would be providing services on both days of the photo shoots. I then arranged the details of the entire logistics plan with my husband, who would be in charge of that for the 2 day shoot, and also serve as an onsite emergency medical helper if any situation arose. Yes…… I like to be prepared for anything just in case.
This preparation took me back to when it all started for me, more than 33 years ago, the day my father got me a sewing machine when I was only 3 years old. The same machine that I still use for quick onsite alteration. I packed it up along with zippers, threads, dress makers pins, pin cushions, scissors, legal agreement documents for participants to sign, hangers, racks, steamers, mannequins, beads, measuring tapes, barcode scanner, clothing tags, wigs, hair pins, industrial fans and a check list of participants and what they were wearing and when they were wearing them. Some of these items were going to be used for props also. I also sent the address of the shoot to the participants.

We closed our office at 10.30pm that night, ready for the 19th, but still short of one model and a location for the 20th.

I was in desperate need of SLEEP.
